*See Usage Notes

Dialog Alert is a current awareness service, available in many databases, that allows you to have a search run online at specified frequencies. Each time the Dialog Alert profile is run, a fee is charged. For an online list of available databases and their current fees, enter HELP ALERTRATE. Individual database fees can be determined by entering HELP RATES n (where n is the file number).

To create an Alert profile, enter your search strategy and then enter SAVE ALERT. Respond to the prompts to set up the scheduling, PRINT command(s), Alert name, and options for de-duplication and notification. Alternatively, you can enter the PRINT command before the SAVE ALERT command. You can also enter the name and scheduling options as part of the SAVE ALERT command, e.g., SAVE ALERT RADIO WEEK. See SAVE ALERT Shortcuts.

When you schedule the Alert, you can choose to have it run based on the file's Alert update frequency or on a customized schedule you specify.

  • If you choose Update scheduling, some files may have more than one update frequency for Alerts and you can opt for the default frequency or select the frequency you want.
  • If you choose Custom scheduling, you will be prompted to set up the exact schedule you want (monthly, weekly, etc.) and the time of day you want the Alert run. For twice-a-month scheduling, Alerts are run the first and third weeks of the month (this means that the scheduling will usually be two weeks apart but occasionally three weeks, depending on the calendar).

You may enter the PRINT command(s) before entering SAVE ALERT or, if not entered, you will be prompted to enter PRINT during the process of creating the Alert. Alternate addresses can be entered in the PRINT command(s) to request that the records be sent to an address other than your account address. Prints can be sent to an email address or to a postal address when an alternate address is specified. Alert prints may also be delivered via FTP. (See EDIT ADDRESS.)

After you have responded to all the prompts, the system displays the Alert settings. You can make changes at this time, save it, or exit without saving. (You can also make changes later using the EDIT command.)

Two search examples follow, the first illustrating Update scheduling and the second showing Custom scheduling.

• To create a Dialog Alert scheduled to run based on the update frequency of the database:

Alert "ROUTER2" saved

Once you have created a Dialog Alert, it is stored on the Dialog system until you RELEASE it. A Dialog Alert profile can also be used as a SearchSave, i.e., the strategy can be used with the EXECUTE, EXS, RECALL and RELEASE commands. You can also share a Dialog Alert profile with other Dialog users (see EXECUTE: Sharing SearchSaves).

• To RELEASE a Dialog Alert profile:

?release router2
Alert "ROUTER2" released
