Support : Dialog Search Aids : Successful Searching : Appendix B

Appendix B: Restricted Words

Virtually any word can be searched with the SELECT command. In certain instances, it may be necessary to use quotation marks around the word or phrase to force the system to search it literally, thus "masking" a function associated with that word. The following words or characters must be masked by enclosing them in quotation marks.

AND
OR
NOT
When included in a search term, these words must be masked to prevent being interpreted as logical operators S "RAIN AND RAINFALL"
FILES
FROM
STEPS
These words have specific meanings in SELECT statements and must always be masked SELECT "FILES"
Sn
En
Rn
If you are searching a term Sn, En, or Rn, and n is less than or equal to the highest set number or E or R number created in your current search, the terms must be masked SELECT "E10"
/nnn Up to 2 digits are allowed after the slash without masking; if 3 or more digits follow the slash, quotes must be used around the entire search term (but not around the search prefix code) SELECT RN="DOE/1387"
/aaaa Phrases containing a slash must be masked SELECT "CAD/CAM"
*
+
=

:
Any term containing an asterisk, plus sign, equal sign, apostrophe, or colon must be placed in quotation marks SELECT CO="A + B RENTALS"

Note: The semicolon CANNOT be masked, and therefore cannot be searched.

Naming searches: All search names must begin with an alphabetical character. The words TEMP and ALERT are not allowed as names. Only the symbols @ (at sign), # (number sign), and $ (dollar sign) can be included in the name.
