File 6: "NTIS - National Technical Information Service" Report Number (RN=) and CAS® Registry Number (RN=)

The RN= field includes the following numbers: Report Number, NTIS Accession Number, Patent Number, and CAS® Registry Number.
Report Numbers. The NTIS database by definition is report literature. Technical reports are often produced to report to a sponsoring agency. They allow for prompt and flexible distribution, and are considered informal literature. They have no size or format restrictions. All records, regardless of document type, have report numbers that may be searched using the Report Number prefix RN:

Report Numbers are often identified by numbers that begin with an alphabetic prefix which identifies the source of the document. The document numbers that follow the prefix may be provided in a variety of formats, and may or may not include hyphens, spaces, slashes, or other punctuation. Some numbers include volume or part numbers. It is essential to EXPAND the report number in the RN= index to explore all possible formats:

Note that you can also search for patents and patent applications by using the subject heading category SC=90 (GOVERNMENT INVENTIONS FOR LICENSING).
All report numbers are cascaded to the initial alphabetic character string (all letters preceding the first hyphen, slash, space, or number) so that numbers from a specific agency can be retrieved with a single SELECT. For example, report number RN=JPL-PUBL-90-45 is cascaded to the entry RN=JPL. Note that only the initial character string is searchable in this manner; if the desired abbreviation or acronym occurs in the middle of a character string, it is NOT retrieved by the cascaded entry. For example, RN=DOE/JPL-1012-110 is not retrieved with SELECT RN=JPL.
Report numbers frequently include one or more slashes. To directly select numbers containing slashes, enclose the entire entry in quotation marks, e.g., SELECT RN="BHRA-85/07".
NTIS Accession Numbers. NTIS accession numbers, used to identify documents for ordering, are indexed in the AA= and RN= index but display on the Accession Number line (the first line) in the displayed record:
