British Nursing Index (BNI) launched on Dialog DataStar

British Nursing Index (BNID), the premier database for the support of education, research, practice and development of UK nurses, midwives, health visitors, and related staff has recently been launched on Dialog DataStar. The database is compiled by a partnership including the Libraries of Bournemouth University, Poole Hospital NHS Trust, Salisbury Healthcare NHS Trust, and the Royal College of Nursing.

British Nursing Index is a tightly focused, bibliographic database comprising over 250 of the most popular and important journal sources in the nursing and midwifery fields. The majority of these sources are specialist British nursing journals, but the file also includes citations to articles on medical, health management and allied health fields relevant to UK nurses and midwives. A representative number of non-UK specialist journals are also included.

The following subject areas are covered by the database:

  • accident & emergency nursing
  • breast cancer
  • evidence based practice
  • learning disabilities
  • midwifery
  • nurse practitioner
  • orthopaedic nursing
  • perinatal & neonatal mortality
  • psychiatric nursing
  • reflective practice
  • student nurses
  • theatre nursing
  • wounds

Documents in the database do not contain abstracts but titles are frequently annotated to give a better indication of the content of the article cited. This approach means that citations can be added to the database very quickly, one of BNI's strengths. BNI uses its own tailor-made thesaurus to enhance retrieval of articles. The database is e-Journal linking enabled.

The addition of BNI complements CINAHL, the nursing source with an international focus, also available on Dialog DataStar (NAHL). BNI and CINAHL together represent access to the best sources of information for the nursing and related professions.

For further information on BNI, consult the Dialog DataStar Datasheet or the Database of Databases (BASE). Search for BASE-BNID for a complete description of BNI.
