Domain Names Database

Many businesses and law firms use Domain Names along with trademarks to help determine their market strategy. Strategic use of domain name information can strengthen their competitive advantage, save time and money, minimize liability, and protect their investments in R&D. Often a business finds it necessary to add its domain name information to its intellectual property portfolio to prevent unintentional domain names expiration errors. Using the Domain Names database (File 225), a company can research current up-to-the-minute and historical domain name information.

The following represents just some of the uses a business or law firm might have for File 225:

  1. When the trademark owner needs to collect information to present in a Uniform Domain Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) action about the prior bad faith registrations of domain names by the Registrant:
    B 225
    E ow=company name
E ao=registrant name or known pseudonym
    S s1 or s2
  2. When the trademark owner needs to collect information about domain names transferred by a Registrant:
    B 225
    E ow=company name
E ao=registrant name or known pseudonym
    S s1 or s2
    S s3/whowas
Note: The Whois data is the most current slice of information on a domain name. Whowas indicates that the domain name record is historical and has been superseded by a new Whois record. Examples of changes that would cause a Whois to become a Whowas would be a change in owner, registrar, or even a change in phone number or contact name. This historical information has never been captured and made available as an archive until now.

  3. When a company needs to find the historical "Whowas" information or create a history for a specific domain name:
    B 225
    S do=domainname.net/whois
    S do=domainname.net/whowas
Dialog also offers Domain Name as a OneSearch® with the trademark files to expand the search capabilities of the typical trademark search. Using the following search strategy provides the widest and most comprehensive search results for any branding need:
    B trademks
    S tr=proposed name?
    S dn=proposed name/whois
    S s1 or s2
