METHOD 3: Modify Your Current Alert Using the EDIT Command

Best method when you want to

  • Revise the search or PRINT statements in your search and are comfortable using the Dialog online editor.

Available in: DialogClassic, DialogClassic Web, DialogWeb—Command.

Use for Alerts created in: DialogClassic, DialogClassic Web, DialogWeb—Command or Guided Search.

Many experienced Dialog command-language searchers will be familiar and comfortable using the Dialog online editor. Using the editor, you can change the text for each line of the saved Alert. You can opt to use the EDIT command to modify only the search and PRINT statements, then enter SAVE ALERT to bring up Alerts menu as shown in Method 1. See Figure 3 below for an illustration of Method 3.

In this example, shown in the DialogClassic interface, the Dialog online editor is used to modify an Alert.

Edit the Alert in a free database (File 410 or 415).

Enter the EDIT command followed by the Alert name.

 Each setting is numbered.  To change the setting, enter the number.

To customize the frequency, enter "2" for the Frequency setting, 
then "C" to Customize the settings.

When you have finished modifying the settings, enter "S" to save 
the Alert.  If you do not specify a different name, you are asked 
to confirm that the existing Alert should be overwritten.
