Enhance Your Dialog AlertsSM (cont'd)

METHOD 2: Recreate the Alert Using the EXECUTE Command With an Existing Alert

Best method when you want to

  • Revise the search or PRINT statements in your search
  • To change the delivery format or address.

Available in: DialogClassic, DialogClassic Web, DialogWeb—Command.

Use for Alerts created in: DialogClassic, DialogClassic Web, DialogWeb—Command or Guided Search.

This method involves running your Alert as an interactive search, using the ADD command to add additional databases (or modify the "Databases" list in the Alerts settings menu), modifying the search strategy as desired, then entering SAVE ALERT to modify delivery options and save the revised Alert.

Because an Alert is a SearchSave (search stored in a file), you can use the editor-related commands to view, modify, or execute it. EXECUTE (EX) or EXECUTE STEP (EXS), followed by the Alert name, will execute the Alert as an interactive search. Only the following commands in the saved Alert are executed: SELECT, SELECT STEPS, SET and SORT; the PRINT commands are ignored. The difference between EX and EXS is that EX runs the search and creates a single final set, whereas EXS runs the search and creates sets for each search statement. In most cases, EXS would be the command of choice.

When you SAVE your revised Alert with a new name, be sure to delete the old Alert, e.g., RELEASE <name>. If you have not entered a new PRINT statement, you will be prompted to do so when you enter SAVE ALERT. See Figure 2 below for an illustration of Method 2. [Appears at end of this document]

In this example, shown in the DialogClassic interface, an existing Alert is rerun as an interactive search using the EXS command, the ADD command is used, and the revised Alert is saved.
