Support : Publications : Chronolog Archives : June 2002 From the Experts... Tip 1: Cascading Class Codes in the Patent Files Indexing of the International Classification code IC=C07A-021/04 is "cascaded" which means that you can search IC=C07A to retrieve the main class and all of the subclasses under it. The codes are also cascaded at the slash so that you can search IC=C07A-021 to retrieve all similar subclasses. You can also search all codes that start with the stem IC=C07 by entering SELECT IC=C07? ?. Because the system looks only at the characters cascaded to four characters, it will not exceed the 2000 term limit that might otherwise be reached if you truncated the code after the third character.

How about learning exactly which papers cite him or her? Dialog allows cited reference searching in Social SciSearch® (File 7), Arts & Humanities Search® (File 439), and SciSearch®: a Cited Reference Science Database (Files 34,434). You can also search cited reference files by a subject area or do a OneSearch if you are not sure where your author's subject area may be indexed (e.g., ?BEGIN 7,434,34). It's important to point out that only the first author is indexed in the CR= field. Thus, you can't just search for a favorite author's citations and hope to retrieve everything. You need to verify who the first author is and use that name. Topic: Find out who has quoted the article written by Tyler Jacks, in 1992, in Nature (Vol. 359, p. 295) on the effects of an Rb mutation in the mouse. How many times has this publication been cited?
Note: Cited references are indexed under CR= prefix followed by the cited author's name, the year of the cited article, the volume number, the page number cited, and the journal that published the cited article. Cited references are indexed only by the first author of the article.
If one paper is frequently cited by others, it could represent a significant contribution.
You can also easily locate all articles citing any work by a given author, using the Cited Author (CA=) field.
