NewsLine Search Tips

Profound® NewsLine presents the same comprehensive collection of current information as NewsRoom on Dialog and DataStar. Take advantage of these tips for searching NewsLine to help you get exactly the news you need.

Focus on the title or lead paragraph

When search terms appear in key sections such as title or lead paragraph, it is usually a good indication that the story is very relevant.

For title searches, enter terms in the Titles: search box.

For lead paragraph searches, type your search terms in the Free Text: box preceded by the THESTART& operator.

You can enter up to 150 characters in a search box.

Increase precision with proximity connectors

Searching for terms that appear close together is a good way to ensure that the terms are discussed in relation to one another in the story. The NEAR operator [&], achieved using the ampersand between two words, will retrieve articles with the terms within ten words of each other. To search for a phrase using &, use quotation marks around the phrase.

Add a colon plus a number [:nn] to specify how many words can come between the terms, 1 to 50. The NEAR operator can be used in the Titles: or Free Text: search boxes.
