Searching Trademarks on Dialog1

Dialog1 is a suite of powerful and simple to use search forms that allows users to obtain relevant information from Dialog with just "one click" of the mouse. Anyone can use it. An attorney searching for a Japanese patent number, a scientist looking for drug data from a clinical trial, a business consultant checking on a competitor's most recent acquisition, or anyone else who needs authoritative information to perform his or her job can find the answer on Dialog1. This easy to use interface is attractive to information professionals and their clients alike because Dialog1 provides the content that only Dialog can offer to assist organizations in their decision making processes.

How was Dialog1 developed?

Librarians and information professionals, who wanted an end user solution that would provide relevant and authoritative information to their clientele, helped to develop Dialog1. The skills of these expert Dialog searchers have been leveraged in the “behind the scenes” search strategies that drive many of the queries in Dialog1. Are you uncertain about how to perform a Japanese patent number search? Then just put in the patent number and let the Dialog1 Japanese Finder perform the search for you. Did you know that in order to gather the complete patent family in the Derwent World Patent Index file, you must perform multiple map iterations of the priority application number? Dialog1 performs this complicated search for you in one click gathering the complete patent family quickly and easily. As you can see, some of the skills of professional searchers are captured within Dialog1, and these are just a couple examples of the powerful tools available.

Searching Trademarks in the Intellectual Property Module

Dialog1 is divided into seven research modules, including Biotech, Business Intelligence, Energy, Intellectual Property, Marketing, Pharmaceuticals, and World News. The Intellectual Property module is divided into three sections: Patents, Trademarks, and Copyrights, and the Trademarks section has been enhanced by the recent addition of the TRADEMARKSCAN®-Japan database, which now provides Dialog 1 users with access to over 2.5 million trademarks registered with the Japanese Patent Office. The entire subject coverage for the Trademark section of Dialog1 IP includes the following files:

TRADEMARKSCAN® - Austria [662]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - Benelux [658]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - Canada [127]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - Community Trademarks (CTM) [227]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - Denmark [659]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - France [657]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - Germany [672]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - International Register (WIPO) [671]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - Italy [673]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - Japan [669]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - Liechtenstein [677]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - Monaco [663]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - Spain [228]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - Switzerland [661]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - U.K. [126]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - US Federal [226]
TRADEMARKSCAN® - US State [246]

See Figure 1.   |   See Figure 2.

The Trademarks section of Dialog1 IP allows users to search in the following areas: Exact or Specific Trademarks, Confusingly Similar Trademarks, Last Reported Trademark Owners, All Owners of a Trademark, United States Trademarks by Registration Number, United States Trademarks by Serial Number, United States Trademark Litigation, and Pending Trademarks. There are no dialunits or connect time charges, and the title charges range in cost from free to $0.50 depending on the databases being used.

There are many ways that Dialog1 can help you in searching for trademarks. For example, whenever you are searching for exact or confusingly similar trademark names, Dialog1 gives you the ability to limit against multiple class codes. If you were searching for the exact mark for “Cool Whip” in the international classes of 29 (Meats and Processed Foods) and 30 (Staple Foods), Dialog1 allows you to perform the search in one step against our collection of trademark databases.

See Figure 3.   |   See Figure 4.   |   See Figure 5.

A Dialog1 user could expand on this search by looking for “Confusingly Similar Trademarks.” As in the Classic Dialog system, Dialog1 utilizes the rotated index available in the TRADEMARKSCAN® files, and a searcher could look for any use of the terms “cool” and “whip” in a mark. This is easily done in the Dialog1 search form for “Confusingly Similar Trademarks.”

See Figure 6.   |   See Figure 7.   |   See Figure 8.

As you can see, Dialog1 provides a quick and easy method to access the best collection of Trademark information available. If you have a Dialog account, you can begin using Dialog1 today at http://www.dialog1.com. If not, please contact us at to have representative speak to you about Dialog1.
