Searching Trademark Applications and Registrations in TRADEMARKSCAN®-Japan (File 669)

This Search Solution contains three sections that demonstrate: 1) how to search the text of trademark applications and registrations limiting the results by International Class code; 2) how to create a report of marks retrieved; and 3) how to search using Japanese National Class codes.

Searching the Text of Active Trademark Applications and Registrations Limited By International Class Code

The Rotated Index feature of all TRADEMARKSCAN" files allows you to search for words or strings of letters anywhere in the text of a mark.

Search Example 1: Locate active marks applied for or registered in Japan for "Coca-Cola" or "Coke" products in International Class 32 (Light Beverages).

?b 669
BEGIN File 669.
?s tr=coke?
Search for the word "coke" as a whole word, prefix, suffix, or mid-word string using the Rotated Index (TR=) feature. This is the broadest search possible and will not work without the question mark at the end of the word.
?s tr=coca?
Search for the word "coca" as a whole word, prefix, suffix, or mid-word string.
?s s1 or s2
Combine your sets with OR to create a set of merged results.
?s s3/active
Limit your results to "active" applications and registrations that are not abandoned, cancelled, or expired.
?s s4 and ic=32
Limit your results to International Class code (IC=32).

Creating a Report of Trademark Applications and Registrations

Search Example 2: Using the results from the previous search, create a report of the marks located for Coca-Cola or Coke sorted in alphabetical order including the following data from each record: Trademark Text (/TX), Registration Number (RN=), Date of Registration (DR=), and Status (ST=).

?sort s5/all/tx

SORT the records in S5 on the Trademark Text (/TX) field which creates a new set SORTed in alphabetical order.

?set h 132

SET the horizontal display width to the maximum of 132 characters (the default width is 75 characters).

?set v 0

SET the vertical display to 0 to allow a continuous display.

?report s6/tx,rn,dr,st/all

Use the REPORT command to create a table of the marks in S6 including each mark's text, registration number, date of registration, and status. (See Figure 1.)

Using Japanese National Class Codes

Although the records in File 669 do not include a Goods and Services (GS=) field, Japanese National Class codes can be used to locate marks in specific categories of goods and services.

Search Example 3: Locate trademark applications and registrations for other "soft drinks" by identifying and searching on the relevant Japanese National Class (NC=) codes. RANK on the National Classes assigned to Coca-Cola or Coke products in International Class 32 to locate marks for similar types of beverages.

?RANK s6/nc/all
RANK on the National Class (NC=) field of the records in S6 to determine which ones are most commonly assigned.

?s nc=29C01
SELECT the most commonly assigned National Class 29C01 (Soft drinks, Fruit juices) and TYPE your results or narrow by other search criteria.

Note: The class codes themselves are searchable, but the text of the words explaining them are not searchable.
