Global News Coverage Grows in 2001

With the speed and complexity of the global economy expansion, there has never been a greater need for businesses to respond to local, regional, and international events as they happen. To help meet this challenge, Dialog increased its news resources significantly in 2001 with the launch of several news databases and the addition of many new titles to extend the global reach of Profound NewsLine.

Note: For more information about news sources in the pharmaceutical and biomedical industries, see the Pharmaceutical/Biomedical article.

The Financial Times and the companion FT.com electronic journal are recognized worldwide for authoritative, accurate, and analytical reporting, and are firmly established in the ranks of the world's leading English language news sources. Published six times a week, and updating daily on Dialog, the Financial Times (File 476/label FTNP) is an essential business publication. Its clearly focused and comprehensive global coverage makes it an indispensable read for the international business community. Experienced journalists ensure that balanced and accurate information is combined with objective and impartial analyses.

The Financial Times' coverage spans over 30,000 international companies and their subsidiaries, reporting on such activities as: executives and executive changes, financial results, government regulations, market and competitive activity, mergers and acquisitions, political developments, technology, and world trade.

EIU Business Magazines (File 622) now allows searching across the following, globally-respected titles published by the The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU): The Economist (International Edition), CFO (Chief Financial Officer), Journal of Commerce, and Roll Call. These titles were also added to NewsLine in 2001.

PIRA Management and Marketing Abstracts (File 249/label MMKA) provides abstracts covering all aspects of management and marketing practice and customer and industrial relations in the single European market and worldwide.

A new collection of databases from Centaur Communications (CENT) went live on DataStar in October. Although Centaur is one of the UK's leading business magazine publishers, the information is highly relevant to other regions. Each subfile represents an industry segment: marketing and advertising (CMAR), media (CMED), engineering (CENG), and finance and law (CFLW).

The Daily and Sunday Telegraph (File 756) comes from London and contains the complete text of the final editions of these two papers. Both papers are well known for quality news stories and excellent coverage in business issues and sporting events. Use this file, which is updated daily, to find information about London and the United Kingdom, as well as some international events, science, technology, fashion, the arts, TV, and radio.

The Mirror Group Publications (File 757) is a compilation of eleven newspapers spanning the United Kingdom and gives complete coverage of news stories in Great Britain, Ireland, and Scotland. Updated daily, there is complete coverage of local, national (United Kingdom), and international news stories, as well as stories about the arts, education, business, popular culture, science, health, people, TV, and radio.

Profound NewsLine Adds Extensive Content

In 2001 Profound NewsLine also expanded its wealth of sources to provide news around the globe from Australia and Asia, to the Middle East and North Africa to North America, and Europe.

Coverage of Russia and eastern Europe has increased. WPS Media Monitoring Agency, the premier independent media monitoring company in Russia, provides unmatched access to Russian newspapers, television, and radio. Sources, such as What the Papers Say, Defense & Security, Banking, The Russian Oil and Gas Report, and Russia's Market of Pharmaceutical Products enable users to identify opportunities and monitor the latest developments no matter what their business. Rounding out this part of the world, MEDIAFAX News Agency in Romania, Interlic in Moldova, and Infobank News Agency in the Ukraine offer key stories on politics, economic and financial issues, as well as the trade and communication fields in Central and Eastern Europe.

Content from Australia has been greatly enhanced. Australasian Business Intelligence provides news from Australian, New Zealand, and South East Asian newspapers, business journals, and trade magazines. Other providers, such as RWE produces: RWE News, comprehensive coverage of company, business and financial, and economic news of the region; RWE Markets, which focuses on stock market news in the U.S. and Europe; and RWE Intelligence, which covers investment review and analysis of the stock market.

Recently added to the Australian resources on NewsLine is the John Fairfax Holdings Limited journals. Fairfax is Australia's leading publishing group. Its mastheads include The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, The Australian Financial Review, BRW and The Sun-Herald. In addition, Fairfax publishes financial and consumer magazines. The most prominent title from this impressive list is The Australian Financial Review. This title is the key publication reporting on business and financial activities for Australia. All of these titles plus some regional newspapers are now available.

In Europe Deutscher Fachverlag, one of the largest independent business press publishers in Germany and Europe, publishes titles that cover all major trade and economic sectors in that region. This is just one of the newspapers recently added to the German collection on NewsLine.

News sources from other countries in Europe have also been added to NewsLine. Two of the leading Italian newspapers provide cover-to-cover full text in Italian. From Holland Newsselect offers Dutch language business news in the form of abstracts covering all major Dutch magazines, journals, and newspapers. News from other countries includes: coverage of the IT and telecom sectors in the Nordic countries; scientific and technical bulletins from France, and the APA-Austria Presse Agentur in Austria.

The United Kingdom collection on NewsLine has also increased with the addition of the Liverpool Daily Post and Liverpool Echo. In addition, The Western Mail, South Wales Echo, and Wales on Sunday provide a voice for Wales.

Dialog continues to be a leader in providing current, global news with its premier databank of business, political, economic, investment, and financial news resources.
