Food Science & Technology Abstracts (FSTA™)
What's the Position with Patents?

For those working in the food sector, patents are often key sources of information. Therefore, from November 2000 onward, patent coverage in File 51 on Dialog and FSTA on DataStar was significantly increased to provide you with even more help to:

  • Keep abreast of technical development in your sphere of interest
  • Keep you up to date with new product development
  • Keep an eye on what your competitors are working on

Prior to November 2000, FSTA monitored patents from:

  • European Patent Office patents (EPO Patents)
  • World Patents (Patent Cooperation Treaty - PCT) from 104 countries
  • Individual country patent office patents from Germany, France, The Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the United States.

In November 2000 FSTA also began monitoring patents from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal and Canada.

For patents from individual country patent offices that FSTA does not directly monitor, the database will still include abstracts of all significant patents when they're filed elsewhere (e.g. as a World (PCT) or European Patent Office (EPO) patent) as in the following example:
