Current Veterinary Topics Searchable in CAB ABSTRACTS

Since the start of the recent outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the United Kingdom in February 2001, there has been an enormous increase in interest in all aspects of this devastating disease, not only in the UK but also throughout Europe and the rest of the world. The CAB ABSTRACTS database (File 50 on Dialog; file CABI on DataStar), traditionally known for its agricultural content, is one of the world's leading sources of veterinary medicine and animal health information. The veterinary science portion of CABI is also available as a standalone database on DataStar, file label VETS.

With an open journal scanning policy and international coverage of primary source material, CAB ABSTRACTS is in a strong position to bring together references to all the important research material published anywhere in the last thirty years or more. CAB ABSTRACTS covers all aspects of foot and mouth disease from symptoms, diagnosis, and epidemiology to prevention, control, legislation, and policy issues.

Search Tips. To search for references to the disease-causing agent, the Organism Descriptor Aphthovirus should be used and will retrieve over 2,750 references. To search for references about the disease, the controlled index term "Foot and Mouth Disease" should be used but, because the phrase contains the Boolean operator AND, the phrase should be enclosed in quotes on Dialog (i.e. S "FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE"/DE; and using hyphens on DataStar (i.e., FOOT-AND-MOUTH-DISEASE.DE). A search of the full database from 1973 to the present will retrieve over 3,500 records on this subject. Other Descriptor Terms that might be used to restrict the search include: diagnosis, prevention, control, vaccine, epidemics, and legislation.

Remember to think CAB ABSTRACTS (F50/CABI), for all your veterinary medical and animal health information needs.
