Course Wrap-Up (cont'd)
Throughout this online course on trademarks, we have completed searches in Dialog's family of trademark databases. The searches illustrated are typical of ones that you are likely to be called upon to conduct for your own research or that of your clients.
- In Lesson 1 we searched for an Exact Trademark, one that was known to us.
- In Lesson 2 we conducted preliminary screening searches to obtain the most comprehensive coverage for trademarks.
- In Lesson 3 we explored the European trademark databases. We learned how to search for owners, whether we wanted the Last Owner Reported or an historic overview of all owners of a specific trademark. We also learned to limit searches to the legal status of a mark as a way to gain intelligence on our competition.
- In Lesson 4 we used the European databases to refine searches with classification codes and using the goods and services descriptions provided about a mark.
- In Lesson 5 we focused on the U.S. trademark databases, both U.S. Federal and U.S. State, to search comprehensively in the United States. We used some of the techniques we learned in earlier lessons—using the rotated index, searching for owners, and limiting with legal status—to check future products of a company.
- In Lesson 6 we learned how to monitor trademark activity on a continuous basis by setting up a Dialog Alert.
- Finally, in Lesson 7 we learned how to locate domain names and their owners.
