Searching for Historic Records

The Domain Names database also provides a record of all owners of a particular domain name as well as the changes in the status of the name.

Jeri —

Thanks for the update on the Legoland domain name. I understand that you also have access to historic information about a domain name. Can you get me all that is available about Legoland that Kirkbi was involved with? And, that's it!

Thanks,
—Ray

The Domain Names database also supplies information on the history of a domain name through various owners and different statuses. The database is divided into two types of records: Whois for current ownership and Whowas for historic records. Dialog indexing in the database makes it possible to search just the historic records for the information Ray wants.

We'll do another search for historic records for Legoland where Kirkbi was the registrant. This time we'll search for Legoland using the prefix (DN=) for the domain name.

S DN=LEGOLAND

Learn More #4:

The Whois data is the most current slice of information on a domain name found in the database.

Whowas is a name coined by Dialog to indicate that the domain name record is historical and has been superseded by a new Whois record. Examples of changes that would cause a Whois to become a Whowas record would be a change in owner, registrar, or even a change in phone number or contact name. This historical information has never been captured and made available as an archive until now.
