Refining Trademark Searches (cont'd)

Goods and Services descriptions may be used to further narrow a search after refining by a class code. The applicant for the trademark furnishes the description of the product or service that the mark represents or is intended to represent. We must make sure to use synonyms, truncation (primarily for plurals), and proximity operators. There is no standard vocabulary for goods/services descriptions. Learn More

For our search we will enter the following search strategy in the command text box:

Learn More #4:

The Goods/Services description is a free-form entry of the goods and services, and cannot be relied upon for consistency. However, it can be extremely valuable in obtaining an overview of the market for a particular product. Here are some suggestions for searching:

Search Tip 4-4:

Use synonyms and truncation generously since the GS= field uses an uncontrolled vocabulary.

This field should be searched with caution. Use proximity connectors between individual words.

Example:
s gs=(sun(w)glass?) or gs=sunglass?

Search Tip 4-5:

Goods/Services descriptions appear in a file's native language so it is a good idea to use words from the native language as well as English words.

Example:
s (color or colour)/gs
s gs=(color or colour)
