When you have finished all of the questions, click the "Check Yourself" icon to view correct answers.

1. Write search strategies to answer the following questions:

  1. Check the TRADEMARKSCAN-U.S. Federal database for marks currently or previously owned by the Campbell Soup Company. You want to look at trademark text from the first five records of this database.

  2. Conduct a screening search in the European Trademark databases for the mark KOOL CAT for cat food. Narrow by International Class if necessary. TYPE at least one mark from each database.

[Hint: Try variant spellings. Try the IC= code 31 for Natural Agricultural Products.]

  3. Do a screening search in TRADEMARKSCAN-U.S. Federal on the mark VISION for X-ray equipment. Narrow by international class code and goods/services. TYPE out all records in SHORT format.

[Hint The IC code for electrical and scientific apparatus is 9; the IC code for medical apparatus is 10]

2. Complete the following search using the ONTAP database for TRADEMARKSCAN-U.S. Federal (File 296).

  1. Are there any trademarks for conservation of natural resources or recycling?

[Hint: Use the Goods and Services (GS=) field.]

Learn More #1:

There are two ways to put the search strategy together:

  1. We can put all of the search terms together in one search statement. If this method is used, and we use AND and OR operators in the same search query, we must group the synonyms using parentheses.

Example: s (threat? or hazard?) and (radon or asbestos)

  2. We can create a separate set for each concept and then group the sets together.

    Examples: s threat? or hazard?
    s radon or asbestos
    s s1 and s2

We are using Method 2 in our search strategy.
