Search Scenario
The Search Scenario that follows will form the basis for the information requests and help guide you through the course.
Jeri works for Crane, Tilley, Weeks, and Associates, a large legal firm that specializes in trademarks. She has been in charge of doing most of the trademark searching on Dialog for the entire firm. With business expanding, the managing partners have indicated that most employees in the firm will need to be responsible for their own basic trademark online searching.
While Jeri will continue to do any complex searches, she has been tasked with training other attorneys, paralegals, and legal assistants on how to search Dialog for basic trademark information.
To roll out this new idea, the senior partner calls a meeting and asks that Jeri identify the "next step." Here's what Jeri has to say to the staff:
"As you all know, I have been doing most of the trademark research for the firm for several years now. I got the answers from Dialog, an information databank, and now I want to share with you how you can get those same answers for yourself.
"To help you, I am putting together an Introduction to Trademark Searching Using DialogWeb as an online course that you can run through on our Intranet. I want you to take just an hour or so a day and review the lessons and practices. It should only take you a total of about 5-6 hours to complete everything. By the end of the course, you should be capable of doing your own basic trademark research. Throughout the course, I will pass on requests for information, and then take you step-by-step through the process I would go through to answer the requests.
I think you will find the process interesting. The course materials should be available on the Intranet tomorrow."
Here's the chance to be the "fly on the wall" and follow an experienced searcher as she explores the trademark databases. We hope the lessons that follow will form a model to help you answer the questions that your boss poses.
