Using OneSearch

For this search we want to conduct a OneSearch in the Major U.S. Newspapers category. This will allow us to see if the major news sources are saying anything about the Alcoa acquisition.

Click the Command Summary icon to see a summary of the commands we will use for this search.

We start our search by entering the BEGIN command in the command text box. We add the CURRENT command to our search to retrieve the current year, plus one back year and click the button.

We can now enter our SELECT statement in the command text box and click the button. The SELECT command would look like this:

select alcoa and (merger? or takeover? or acqui? or alliance?)/ti,lp

We can also use the databases selection tool, DIALINDEX, which simplifies database selection by arranging databases by subject. DIALINDEX lets us preview search results across a group of databases. This enables us to identify databases that contain records on the subject.

Once we know which database(s) has information on our topic, we can redo the search in the best one(s). Using DialogWeb, we click Databases to begin our search.
