Lesson 6: Locating Information on Mergers, Acquisitions, Alliances, and Partnerships

Objectives

Introduction

The past decade has seen an increase in partnering, mergers and acquisitions, and joint ventures, not only between U.S. companies, but also between companies in the U.S. and those in other countries. These cooperative agreements have enabled companies to expand their customer base, increase their market share, and enter new markets.

There is no way to know for sure the product lines or markets a company will enter or what direction an industry will take, but information about partnerships, joint ventures, or other types of alliances a company is pursuing can provide clues about where a company is headed. Information about new alliances can also tell a searcher something about the growth of an industry.

Chris, our researcher, has received a request from his client, Bev. She is interested in merger information. We will follow Chris' thinking as he fulfills Bev's inquiry.

Chris,
I have heard that the Alcoa Aluminum Company is trying to strengthen its market position by acquiring Reynolds Aluminum. What can you find out about this venture?
Thanks in advance,
Bev

Dialog has several sources that provide information on mergers and acquisitions. In Lesson 2 we reviewed some of the news sources. Newspapers, newswires, regional, and international news are often places to find merger/acquisition information.

Let's take a look at some of the sources in detail.
