Searching for a Product Name

For this query I will use a product name to conduct my search. Bev is interested specifically in Eli Lilly so I will include the company name in my search, using the alternate technique for searching for a company name discussed in Lesson 1.

Having decided on possible terms for my search strategy, I want to select the appropriate database. Dialog has a number of databases that focus on products.

Key Sources
Click the Key Source icon to see a table identifying databases containing product information.

For our purposes, I think Business & Industry Database (File 9) will provide the information Bev wants. File 9 is a multi-industry file that provides rich indexing in the form of commonly used business terminology to enable highly specific retrieval.

The search is demonstrated below using DialogWeb 2.0. You will have a chance to try searching DialogWeb on your own for the practice exercises at the end of the lesson.

To begin my search, I enter my BEGIN statement in the command text box as follows:

   begin 9

Search Tip 5-1:

We may want to check the File 9 bluesheet before continuing our search.

We can access the Basic and Additional Indexes by clicking the FIELDS button. This will tell us what suffixes (e.g., /pn) or prefixes (e.g., PN=) can be used in this database.

Example:
select prozac/pn
