Industry/Company News Sources

There are a number of databases on Dialog that provide fulltext news articles from sources located around the world. Bev's request immediately narrows our choice of databases to news and trade press sources.

Dialog has regional, national, and international newspapers. On DialogWeb news is divided into categories: Today's News, News by Region, Global News, and Other News Sources which includes newswires. Learn More 2-1

The Dialog Global Reporter (File 20) database, for example, provides both newspaper and magazine articles. Dialog also includes numerous databases like Business & Industry Database™ (File 9) containing trade press coverage of business issues.

It is often a good idea to peruse several sources to get varying viewpoints and take advantage of search techniques offered in different databases. If we are unsure of which databases to search, we can use DialogWeb's databases selection tool, DIALINDEX. Learn More 2-2

We can also click the Database Descriptions to learn more about the content of individual databases. Learn More 2-3

Dialog contains over 200 newspapers & newswires worldwide.

Dialog NewsRoom contains major U.S. papers including New York Times®, Miami Herald, Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune and Philadelphia Inquirer.

International news fulltext is included for such regions as the Middle East, Latin America, the UK & Europe, Canada, Africa, the Pacific Rim, and Eastern Europe.

Newspapers are an excellent source of business information. Searching a newspaper database can yield important information about a company or industry. For instance, the San Jose Mercury News is an excellent source of information pertaining to the Silicon Valley. Be sure to include the local paper in your company search.

The free databases selection tool, DIALINDEX, simplifies database selection for us by arranging databases by subject. DIALINDEX lets us preview search results across a group of databases. This enables us to identify databases that contain records on the subject. Once we know which database(s) has information on our topic, we can redo the search in the best one.

To get started on DialogWeb 2.0, I will go to http://www.dialogweb.com and logon by entering my user ID and password.

When the Command Search main page appears, I click Databases.

Knowing the content of databases is extremely important to get accurate search results. I often look at the database descriptions to get specific information about the database content.

For example, if we want to search The New York Times and the The Boston Globe, we can click the titles of the papers and review complete descriptions of each newspaper.

We should probably review several databases before deciding on the ones to search.
