Monitoring Company News

After looking at the descriptions of the databases, I've decided to use Business & Industry Database (File 9) to take advantage of some of their indexing and their worldwide coverage for the search on Burger King.

First, let's see what Burger King is doing to stay competitive in the fast-food industry against competition like McDonald's. Their tactics might include expansion in the U.S., marketing campaigns, and new markets outside the U.S.

The search is demonstrated below using DialogWeb 2.0.

When the Command Search main page appears, I will enter by BEGIN command: BEGIN 9 in the command text box, and click the submit button.

   BEGIN 9

Next, I enter my SELECT command in the command text box as follows and click the SUBMIT button.

   select burger(w)king/co and number(w)outlets/de and py=1999

I have restricted my search on BURGER KING to the company name field using /CO and limited retrieval to the year 1999. I can also take advantage of the indexing in File 9 by using the descriptor term: number outlets. Tip 2-1

begin 9

The search history screen shows us that there are 29 records with this search strategy.

Company News about Burger King: Sample Search

?begin 9
?select burger(w)king?/co and number(w)outlets/de and py=1999
?type s1/medium/1-5
?type s1/full/1,2

Search Tip 2-1:

File 9 has an extensive indexing system which we can use for this search.

Concept terms, such as market share, sales, shipments, number of outlets, help us find key information often buried in an article.

Indexing in File 9 is included in the descriptor field (/de).

Example:
select company(w)forecasts/de
