Lesson 2: Monitoring Company and Industry News
Objectives
In this lesson, you will learn to:
- Identify different news sources
- Create search strategies to retrieve information from news sources
- Identify databases containing industry news
Introduction
News Sources — newspapers, newswires, newsletters, journals — are an invaluable means of tracking information on private and public companies, as well as obtaining late-breaking regional and international news. These sources, whether to help develop a new product or service, explore opportunities in a totally new market, or identify partners for a business venture, will provide competitive intelligence to help a company gain an advantage in the marketplace.
In addition to the news sources, some of Dialog's multi-industry databases covering journals and newsletters are highlighted in this lesson. Trade and industry journals and newsletters provide information on targeted companies and/or industries, such as:
- Industry size
- Business segment data
- Forecasts for growth
- Acquisition strategies
- Marketing and advertising plans
- New products and technologies
- Industry and consumer trends
- Facilities expansion
Dialog also has specialized industry databases to assist in analyzing particular industries.
In Lesson 1 Chris, our researcher, found basic company information. Now Chris has another request. Again, we'll watch how Chris fills that inquiry to provide a model to help us search for company and industry news.
Chris,
The fast-food giants like McDonalds and Burger King are still fighting for market share. I've heard that they are continuing to look for business outside the U.S. Can you find any information on what Burger King is doing to try to gain market share?
Let me know...
Bev
