Search Scenario
The Search Scenario that follows will form the basis for the information requests and help guide you through the course.
Chris has recently been promoted to Director of Market Analysis at Best Analysis, a company in the United States that provides industry analysis for different market segments. Until his promotion, Chris did most of the competitive intelligence research. He searched Dialog not only for himself, but for fellow employees in the division. He even tackled urgent requests from the top executives. One of the major reasons for his promotion was the high visibility research he performed for the "big brass." Chris now has a new project and plans to show his team how to do some of the research he will need to perform for the video game industry.
In his new position as Director, Chris now plans to make sure that his staff is able to do the same type of crucial research he did. To rollout his training idea, he calls a staff meeting.
Here's what he tells his analysts:
"As you all know, I have just been promoted to Director of Market Analysis at Best Analysis. I want to let you in on the secret of my success. In my past position, I have had the right answers at the right time for the right people! How did I do this? Well, by researching all sorts of questions I needed to do my job, those requested by fellow employees, and by feeding information to the "big bosses." I got the answers from Dialog, an information databank. Now I want to share with you how you can get those same answers for yourself.
"To help you, I am putting together Introduction to Searching Dialog Classic as an online course that you can run through on our Intranet. I want you to take just a half-hour or so a day and review the lessons and practices. It should only take you about 4-5 hours to complete everything. By the end of the course, you should be capable of doing your own research. Throughout the course, I will pass on requests for information, and then take you step-by-step through the process I would go through to answer the requests.
"The course materials should be available on the Intranet tomorrow."
