The Drug Profile Record (cont'd)

The bibliographic part of the record also contains important drug information.

As we noted earlier, IMS R&D Focus is unique in that it contains the Laboratory Code and Nomenclature fields. Sharon should be interested in this.

Tip 2-6 Tip 2-7

Note that File 445 does not classify therapeutic action.

Other important parts of the Drug Information section of the record include:

  1. The CAS® Registry Number is used to search for chemicals, as well as the chemical name.
  2. The Pharmacological Action or pharmacokinetics provides a description of how the drug works.
  3. The Substance Origin field displays a description of the chemical origin of the drug.
  4. The Therapeutic Class Code describes what the drug is and places it into a category with similar drugs.
  5. The Clinical Indications tells the clinical condition for which the drug is used.
  6. The Molecular Code is a unique code number for each drug entry in all IMS databases.

I think I'll send this bibliographic part of the record to Sharon before I retrieve the entire record. Maybe this is all she needs.

Search Tip 2-6

The laboratory code is searchable using the CD= prefix.

Example:
S CD=AG 1749

Search Tip 2-7

To search for Nomenclature, use NC=.

Example:
S NC=INN

Search Tip 2-8

You can use the prefix RN= to search for the CAS® Registry Number.

Example:
S RN=103577-45-3

Search Tip 2-9

To find out what the drug is used for, search just for the pharmacological action. Note the mechanism of action field is not included in all records.

Example:
Expand ac=proton pump inhibitor
Select ac=proton(1w)inhibitor
Select (proton()pump()inhibitor)/ac

Note that you need proximity connectors when you search using the suffix: /AC

Learn More #4:

IMS bases its indexing on the anatomic/therapeutic classification scheme. Note that each database in the pipeline directory group has introduced variations. Do not assume that codes are equivalent across files. File 445 follows EPhMRA therapeutic class codes.

File 445 is one of three databases (Adis R&D Insight and Pharmaprojects) that consistently classifies drugs by indication. To focus a search more specifically, supplement File 445 action strategies with keywords, including synonyms (e.g., antibiotic or anthracycline).

Search using the prefix TC= to explore therapeutic category options. EXPAND on TC= to confirm the code.

Example:
EXPAND TC=L1

Results:

Ref Items Index-term
E1 1302 TC=J8X (ALL OTHER ANTI-INFECTIVES)
E2 3 TC=J8X (ANTI-INFECTIVE OTHER)
E3 0 *TC=L1
E4 327 TC=L1A (ALKYLATING AGENTS)
E5 458 TC=L1B (ANTIMETABOLITES)
E6 1 TC=L1C (VINCA ALKALOID)
E7 804 TC=L1C (VINCA ALKALOIDS AND OTHER PLANT PRODUCTS
E8 3 TC=L1D (CYTOSTATIC ANTIBIOTIC)
E9 645 TC=L1D (CYTOSTATIC ANTIBIOTICS)

....

You can also use: SELECT TC=L? to retrieve all of the items L1A-L4A.

Search Tip 2-10

Clinical indications are searched using the suffix /IN. Because the IN field is indexed by word (not phrase), IMS sometimes (but not always) provides indications indexing coordinated with Development Status (e.g., Phase II, Europe, amyotropic lateral sclerosis)

Example:
S gastrointestinal(w) ulcer/IN
