Using the EXPAND Command (continued)

In File 72, I'll use the EXPAND command to conduct the search on the author Sugahara, then refine it to see what Sugahara has written in 1998 and 1999.

Here's how it will look.

Step 1: EXPAND using the appropriate prefix and term:

e au=Sugahara

TYPE the command at the question mark prompt and press ENTER.

Set Items Description
      --- ----- -----------
?e au=sugahara
Ref Items Index-term
E1 0 *AU=SUGAHARA
E2 2 AU=SUGAHARA A.
E3 3 AU=SUGAHARA C.
E4 1 AU=SUGAHARA E.
E5 18 AU=SUGAHARA H.
E6 1 AU=SUGAHARA I.
E7 108 AU=SUGAHARA K.
E8 21 AU=SUGAHARA M.
E9 6 AU=SUGAHARA N.
E10 28 AU=SUGAHARA S.
E11 71 AU=SUGAHARA T.
E12 14 AU=SUGAHARA Y.
Enter P or PAGE for more

Step 2: SELECT the E-numbered lines that contain variations for the author Sugahara. Because I want everything Sugahara is doing on shark-based treatment, I want to get all of the Sugahara entries listed in the database. I will choose E numbers 2-12 and type the command:

s e2:e12

?s e2:e12
           S1 273 AU="SUGAHARA A.":AU="SUGAHARA Y."

I want what Sugahara has written about shark-based treatment. I can now refine my search to include the term shark. I also want records from 1998 and1999 only, so I will use the prefix PY=1998:1999 to narrow the search further.

My search would look like this:

s s1 and shark? and py=1998:1999

?s s1 and shark? and py=1998:1999
             273 S1
             415 SHARK?
          525293 PY=1998 : PY=1999
      S2 2 S1 AND SHARK? AND PY=1998:1999

This search limited the results to only 2 records. Let's see what we have. I'll use the TYPE command to type out the 2 records in Format 6 and K to get excerpts of the records. Then Brian can decide if he wants the complete records.

Review the records below and then go to the exercises to practice online.
