Using the EXPAND Command (continued)

In File 2, I'll use the EXPAND command to conduct the search on the author Fantacci, then refine it to see what Fantacci is writing about performance evaluation of LEOS, and finally narrow it to the last few years.

Step 1: EXPAND using the appropriate prefix and term:

e au=fantacci

TYPE the command at the question mark prompt and press ENTER.

Set Items Description
--- ----- -----------
?expand au=fantacci

Ref Items Index-term
E1 0 *AU=FANTACCI
E2 3 AU=FANTACCI, E.
E3 1 AU=FANTACCI, M.
E4 39 AU=FANTACCI, M.E.
E5 98 AU=FANTACCI, R.
E6 1 AU=FANTALOV, V.S.
E7 3 AU=FANTANA, N.L.
E8 1 AU=FANTANAS, C.
E9 1 AU=FANTAR, F.
E10 1 AU=FANTASIA, G.
E11 1 AU=FANTASIA, L.G.
E12 1 AU=FANTASIA, M.

Enter P or PAGE for more

Step 2: SELECT the E-numbered lines that contain variations for the author Fantacci. Because I don't know which Fantacci is writing on performance evaluation of LEOS, I want to get all of the Fantacci entries listed in the database. I will choose E numbers 2 through 5 and type the command:

s e2:e5

?s e2:e5
      S1 141 AU="FANTACCI, R."

I want the Fantacci that is involved in performance evaluation of LEOS research. I can now refine my search to include the terms performance evaluation and LEOS. I also want records to include several years, so I will use the prefix PY=1997:1999 to narrow the search further.

My search would look like this:

s s1 and performance(3n)evaluation and leos? and py=1997:1999

?s s1 and performance(3n)evaluation and py=1997:1999
              98 S1
          334941 PERFORMANCE
          137716 EVALUATION
           32284 PERFORMANCE(3N)EVALUATION
          685952 PY=1997 : PY=1999
      S2 3 S1 AND PERFORMANCE(3N)EVALUATION AND PY=1997:1999

This search limited the results to only 3 records. I'll use the TYPE command to type out the records in Format 8 and let Brian decide which ones he wants.

Review the records below and then go to the exercises to practice online.
