Nintendo has downplayed the significance of online
gaming to the success of its GameCube console in 2003.
Nintendo European managing director David Gosen told
Reuters that the relatively slow rollout of high-speed
broadband connections throughout Western Europe would
mean that, in the short term, online gaming "is clearly
not going to be a significant market in terms of size."
Industry analysts suggest that the massive expenditure
required to create the infrastructure for online gaming
may have persuaded Nintendo to delay implementing its
online gaming strategy.
Nintendo publish sales figures
The announcement came after Nintendo revealed yesterday
that it had sold 1.5mn GameCube units in Europe during
2002, just beating rival Microsoft to second place
behind Sony's PlayStation 2. Sony has a massive lead
in the European console market and is expected by
market research firm ScreenDigest to have recorded
sales of around 6mn in 2002. It is thought Microsoft
sold approximately 1.4mn Xbox's in Europe last year.
Industry analysts believe Nintendo's position in the
European market may come under threat in 2003 with
Screen Digest forecasting that Xbox will outsell
GameCube by 2.6mn units to 2.2mn units. In the face of
Microsoft's aggressive strategy of bundling free games
with its console, Nintendo is expected to rely on the
lower price of the GameCube (which at E199 is E50
cheaper than the Xbox) and to focus on the 80 or more
new gaming titles to be released in 2003.
Nintendo's online gaming strategy
With the online gaming market widely expected to
surpass E1bn world-wide by 2006, Nintendo may risk
losing position in this lucrative industry. The
currently expects to enter the market in March with the
launch of one title, Sega Corporation's Phantasy Star
Online, and the selling of broadband and dial-up modem
adapters for European internet users. Such a strategy
is far less elaborate than the business plans announced
by either of Nintendo's main rivals, both of whom are
at a more advanced stage of negotiation with
telecommunications companies and internet service
providers (ISP).
Game Boy Advance SP hotly tipped for 2003
Commentators are more positive in their forecasts for
Nintendo's new Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Advance SP,
however. The Game Boy Advance SP is thinner than its
predecessor, has a brighter screen and a greater
battery life and is expected to appeal to a new, older
group of players. Screen Digest estimates that combined
sales in Europe of the old and new Game Boy Advance
would reach 4.5mn units this year.((Distributed via M2

Brian will be interested to know that Nintendo is not counting on the interactive video game market in Europe and that Xbox is giving GameCube a run for its money, at least in the United Kingdom. Go to the next page to try some of the Exercises.
