Find Relevant Trademarks by Searching Goods and Services Data?
TOPIC: There are several ways to narrow a trademark search: 1) use class codes; and 2) limit to goods and services data. Goods and services are free-text statements provided by the applicant for the trademark that describes what the mark is being used on or for. You can also use goods and services to analyze products or services in specific markets or locate appropriate class(es) for specific products or services. In this example, you want to locate "REACT" marks for computer software by narrowing to the International Class code (IC=) and goods and services data (GS=).
You will search the TRADEMARKSCAN—U.K. (File
126) file, which contains information on
720,506 trademark applications and registrations
published since 1876 in the Trade Mark Journal
of the Trade Marks Branch of The Patent Office
of the United Kingdom. The file also includes
inactive published and unpublished trademarks
from the last five years.
Note: Remember that there is no controlled vocabulary or cross-references in the goods and services field, and descriptions can range from vague to detailed. Use spelling variations, synonyms and truncation. In non-English files, the goods and services field is available in English although it is not searchable. It is a good idea to search the goods and services in the native language.
