Search for a Trademark That Is a Slogan?
TOPIC: Some trademarks, such as slogans, may be several words long, which can cause confusion when doing a screening search. Often you will need to combine a number of sets to include potentially significant combinations of terms. In this example, you will do a screening search for a U.S. trademark that is a slogan: The Other White Meat. Use the rotated trademark index (TR=term?), to search significant words in the slogan.
You will search both U.S. Federal and State trademarks. TRADEMARKSCAN—U.S. Federal (File 226) covers all active, registered trademarks and service marks and applications for registrations filed for marks used or intended to be used on every type of product or service that is marketed commercially in the U.S. TRADEMARKSCAN—U.S. State (File 246) includes trademarks and service marks within the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
COMMAND SUMMARY
BEGIN 226,246
SELECT TR=OTHER?
SELECT TR=WHITE?
SELECT TR=MEAT?
SELECT S1 AND (S2 OR S3)
TYPE S4/49/ALL
SELECT S2 AND S3
SELECT S5 NOT S4
TYPE S6/49/ALL
HOW TO...

1. BEGIN in both U.S. trademark files—Files 226 and 246.
2. SELECT using the rotated index (TR=) to create individual sets for each significant word in the slogan.
3. Combine the sets.

|

4. TYPE the results that have "other" and either "white" or "meat" in
SHORT format (Format 49) to see the trademark
and whether an image is available.
Note: Some records are omitted from this display. |

|

5. Now combine the marks with both "white" and "meat."
6. Create a set of records that you have not already
viewed in Set 4.
7. TYPE out records you have not seen in Format 49. |
