Create a List of Patent Holders in European Countries for a Category of Drug Patents Due to Expire in a Particular Year?
TOPIC: In this example, you want to create a list of patent assignees in European countries that have patents for anti-depressant drugs due to expire in the later half of 2005. IMS Patent Focus (File 447) monitors patent expiration dates worldwide and includes evaluated patent data from 57 countries with priority details (country, number, date) and patent application numbers by country. The therapeutic class code can be used to create a list of drug patents.
The RANK command lets you perform trend or statistical analysis on an existing search set by extracting terms from the specified field(s) in a set of records and lists them in ranked order, with the most highly posted term appearing first.
COMMAND SUMMARY
BEGIN 447
SELECT TC=N6A?
SELECT ED=20050601:20051231
SELECT S1 AND S2
SELECT S3 AND PC=(FR or ES or IT or EP)
RANK PA and follow the RANK menu
EXS
SELECT S4 AND S5
TYPE S6/9/1
Note: If you do not know the therapeutic class code, SELECT the therapeutic class (e.g., antidepressant?) and TYPE the resulting set using Format 6 to see the class code.
HOW TO...

1. BEGIN 447 to search a file that contains drug patent details and expiration dates worldwide.
2. SELECT the therapeutic class code for anti-depressants. Use truncation (?) to retrieve all narrower classes.
3. Use ED=YYYYMMDD for the expiration date range from June 1, 2005 to Dec. 31, 2005.
4. Use PC= to limit the search with specific patent country codes. Note that the country code EP includes the states designated in a regional EP patent, but not applications filed in individual European countries. |

5. Use the RANK command to obtain a list of patent assignees (PA) with the one with the most hits at the top of the list.
Select the company you want to include in your search, in this example, number 3.
Exit the Rank menu to continue searching.
You will be prompted to see if you have saved the terms you want. |
