Use the MAP Command to Eliminate Duplicate Patent Records?
TOPIC: The patent databases on Dialog sometimes present the same patent documents, but in different formats. For example, the CLAIMS®/U.S. Patents (File 340, or 341 to access uniterms for chemical searchers) contains patent information from a single issuing authority and provides the bibliographic data and the text of the claims.
Derwent World Patents Index® (File 351) provides patent family data and abstracts for more than 30 million patent documents from 41 issuing authorities, and INPADOC/Family and Legal Status (File 345) contains patent family data issued by 80 countries and organizations, as well as abstracts and legal status information for 39 countries. For complete search results, without duplicates, use the following search strategy to retrieve the desired patent data from the database that best meets your information needs.
This example shows how to start out in CLAIMS®/U.S. Patents (File 340) with a keyword search on a technology. We will use the MAP command to create a temporary SearchSave holding U.S. patent numbers and any foreign equivalents of those U.S. patents on the Patent Number field (PN); then execute the SearchSave with the extracted data in an international patent database, such as Derwent World Patents Index®, to eliminate data we have already retrieved in File 340.

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN File 340 to search CLAIMS/U.S. Patents.
2. SELECT terms. Dialog looks for terms in the Basic Index, which includes the Title, abstract and text of claims. The (W) connector specifies terms adjacent to each other in exact order. (S) retrieves records where the terms are in the same paragraph. Dialog’s truncation symbol is the question mark “?.”
3. TYPE the records in Format 4, which includes the bibliographic citation and abstract.
Note: Some records have been omitted from this display. |

Abstract: This patent deals with a method to make durable (i.e.,
freeze/thaw resistant), non-vitrified (non-fired) fly ash masonry
units (bricks, blocks, tiles and other construction products), that
can pass contemporary standards for building bricks established by
the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). In contrast,
existing processes for making nonvitrified fly ash masonry units
cannot make products durable. . . . |

4. MAP the Patent Number (PN) field. MAP PN T creates a temporary SearchSave of extracted data from the PN field.

5. BEGIN the search in Derwent World Patents Index to retrieve international patent data.
6. Repeat the keyword search. The connector () acts the same as (W).
7. EXECUTE the SearchSave created from CLAIMS. EXS entered alone defaults to the most recently created SearchSave as long as you have not logged off since creating the SearchSave.
Otherwise enter the Execute command as EXS NNNNN, e.g. EXS TC151.
Note: You can use the command SET SELECT SHORT before the EXS command to display only the postings for the final set (optional).
8. “NOT” out those records that have already been retrieved in the CLAIMS database. Here you are not only eliminating U.S. patents already retrieved, but also any foreign equivalents of those U.S. patents. |
