Find Patent Licensing Information in Dialog’s Business Files?
TOPIC: Patent, trademark and copyright searchers should remember to consult databases outside the usual scope of Dialog's Intellectual Property content. Using Dialog's business databases, users can often find information on licensing agreements, litigation, patent pending technology, and statistical information.
While INPADOC/Family and Legal Status (File 345) may indicate a patent licensing agreement, Business & Industry (File 9) may offer more details on such arrangements and may give information on agreements not covered by INPADOC. This “How Do I…?” shows ways to use indexing tools in File 9 to find late-breaking news in the trade press about companies’ patents and licensing agreements.
Additional business databases with daily updates covering company and industry news include Gale Group PROMT® (File 16), ABI/INFORM® (File 15), Gale Group Trade & Industry Database (File 148), Dialog Global Reporter (File 20) and Dialog NewsRoom (File 990). Each database has its own specialized descriptors and fields, such as the Concept Term (CT=) field in File 9, and the Event Name (EN=) field in File 16.
All of these databases provide Descriptor fields (/DE) that allow you to run term searches using proximity connectors. A good strategy is to search terms in the Descriptor (/DE) OR the Title (/TI) fields (/TI,DE). For example, S LICEN?(4N)AGREEMENT?/TI,DE AND ASTRAZENECA?

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN File 9 to search Business & Industry database.
2. VISUAL EXPAND the company name on the Company Name (CO=) field.
3. Check the appropriate company names and click the Select button. |

|

4. SELECT the Concept Term (CT=) All Intellectual Property. Use EXPAND CT= to see a list of all Concept Terms.
5. SELECT the Concept Term (CT=) Licensing Agreements.
6. COMBINE Sets 1, 2 and 3 (S1 AND S2 AND S3) to retrieve only records that contain all three criteria—the company name, “all intellectual property” and “licensing agreements.” |

|

7. Limit your retrieval to a year range using the Publication Year (PY=) field.
8. You can refine your search further by ANDing a specific term, such as patent? (the word patent truncated with the question mark). |

|

9. TYPE a few records in Format 8 to see title, descriptors and publication years. In this case we’re looking at records from the slightly larger S5.
