Find Information on Patent Litigation in the Business Files? TOPIC: While File 670, LitAlert®, is a great resource for Intellectual Property litigation information, it only covers U.S. District Court level activity and gives little detail concerning the issues involved. In addition to licensing information, Business & Industry (File 9) also provided details about patent, trademark and copyright litigation, as well as news of litigation at the U.S. Federal Circuit/Supreme Court level (e.g., CT=(ALL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY AND LITIGATION). You can also narrow retrieval by ANDing in key words, such as TRADEMARK?/TI,LP, specifying that the added terms must appear in the Title OR the Lead Paragraph (/TI,LP). Additional business databases covering company and industry news daily include Gale Group PROMT® (File 16), Gale Group Trade & Industry Database (File 148), Dialog Global Reporter (File 20) and Dialog NewsRoom (File 990). Each database has its own specialized descriptors and fields, such as the Concept Term (CT=) field in File 9, and the Event Name (EN=) field in Files 16, 20, 148, 990. All of these databases provide Descriptor fields (/DE) that allow you to run keyword searches using proximity connectors. A good strategy is to search terms on the Descriptor OR the Title (/TI) OR the Lead Paragraph (LP) fields (/TI,DE,LP). For example, SELECT (INTELLECTUAL(W)PROPERTY OR PATENT?)/TI,DE AND LITIGAT?/TI,DE,LP,2007. (See below for how to search across several databases at once.) For scholarly, current in-depth background articles on intellectual property litigation, try the same keyword search in ABI/INFORM® (File 15).
