Locate U.S. Government Patents?

TOPIC: You can search for U.S. government published patent applications in File 351, Derwent World Patents Index® by entering the U.S. country code, an N and the seven-digit application series number. To find all the NTIS-published invention applications, search on the Patent Country prefix (PC=) and enter the U.S. country code, followed by a space, then the kind code N (e.g., S PC=US N).

Note: You can also search for a government patent in NTIS (File 6). The format for the application numbers in this file does not correspond to the standard format used for the Application Number field (AN=) in Dialog patent files.

Instead, it is indexed in the Report Number field (RN=) and the format is not standardized. For example, U.S. application 07/072455 (series 07, serial number 072455) is indexed as "RN=PAT-APPL-7-072 455" but other numbers may be formatted differently. EXPANDing on various number formats in the RN= field is recommended. Several examples of patent application number formats in the file include:

RN=PAT APPL SN 774 384
RN=PAT APPL 024 937
RN=PAT APPL 10827
RN=PAT-APPL-SN-828 262
RN=PAT-APPL-094 095
RN=PAT-APPL-7-072 455

A Dialog eLink to the patent may appear in the record (e.g., Check for PDF Download Availability and Purchase).
