Find Prior Art Using International Classification Codes?

TOPIC: In this example, you will identify International Classification codes for a specific category of patents. Patents are legal documents. Codes, which are added to the patents by Patent Examiners and Information Providers, can help researchers with their searches. The U.S. Patent Office, the database producer of the CLAIMS databases and WIPO (World International Patent Organization) have each developed a set of codes.

To find codes, search on synonyms and RANK IC, the International Class code. Then save the top few codes to search. The RANK command extracts terms from the specified field(s) in a set of records and lists them in ranked order. The most highly posted term will appear first.

Use Derwent World Patents Index® (File 351) to obtain descriptive titles of the technology.
