Dialog "How Do I...?" - Patents

Find Pending Patents That May Be Issued to a Company?

TOPIC:In this example, you want to find patents that have been applied for by the toymaker Mattel in the U.S., but have not yet been published or granted.

Derwent World Patents Index® (File 351) uses a four-letter assignee code, along with the prefix CK= or PA=. The assignee code retrieves parent and subsidiary records for companies having fifty or more patents. Some codes contain I (assigned to individuals) or N (non-unique code). Using these codes may retrieve false hits. U.S. Patents Fulltext (Files 654, 652) and CLAIMS®/U.S. Patents (File 340) assign a numeric code and the prefix PA=. Codes will retrieve all patents assigned to a named company only (e.g., pa=53126).

COMMAND SUMMARY

BEGIN 351
VISUAL EXPAND PA=MATTEL
SELECT E

SELECT CK=MATTEL
SELECT S1 or S2

SELECT CAR? ? OR AUTOMOBIL? OR TRUCK? OR BUS OR BUSES
SELECT S3 AND S4
SELECT S5 AND (AC=US NOT PC=US)
TYPE S6/3/1

HOW TO...

3. Use the assignee code prefix (CK=) and assignee code (MATV) to retrieve Mattel entries. Then OR together the assignee name and code to retrieve all Mattel entries.

4. Narrow the search to a type of toy using keywords. Note the limited truncation (? ?) for “car.”

5. Combine the assignee set with the set for type of toy.

6. Search for all U.S. Priority applications that are not yet granted or published, by combining the previous set with ac=us not pc=us.
AC=application country
PC=patent country
