"How Do I...?" - Patents

Find Companies Active in Your Field of Technology?

TOPIC: In this example, your company Medtronic Inc. has patents in the field of technology that uses implant devices for dispensing medicine. You want to find other companies that are also active in the same field. RANKing the patent assignees will provide a list of these companies and allow you to view patents the companies hold.

Derwent World Patents Index® (File 351) provides a descriptive title of the technology for ease in determining what the patent contains.

HOW TO...


1. BEGIN 351, Derwent World Patents Index that contains descriptive patent titles.

2. Use Visual Expand, patent assignee (PA=) and the company name to view a list of companies and check the entries for the company you want.

Note: The patent assignee code (MEDT) can also be used for the search.

3. SELECT keywords for your topic and use a proximity connector (5n) to have keywords within five words of each other.
(Note: ORed terms are in parentheses.)

4. Narrow the search with a date range.

5. NOT out S1 containing your own company to see other companies working in the same area of technology.

6. Click S4 > Tasks > Rank.

7. From the list of Rank fields, check Patent Assignee (Name only) to retrieve a list of patent assignees with the company with the most patents listed first.

8. Check the companies with the most patents in this area of technology to see your competitors and click SEARCH.

Note: If you want to view records from the RANK menu, check the entry, choose a format, the item number and click VIEW.

9. A set of all patent assignees checked is created automatically. Note that this set includes all patents by each of these companies.

10. Combine the keyword set (S4) and the other companies (S5) to limit to patents on the topic of implant devices.

11. TYPE a few records using the user-defined format (TI) to see descriptive titles.
