Search Using a Patent or Publication Number?

TOPIC: In this example, you want to obtain the fulltext of European patent 0813966. You will conduct the search in Derwent World Patents Index (File 351) and then search the fulltext patent files for the complete patent. Non U.S. fulltext files include German Patents (File 324), European Patents Fulltext (File 348) and WIPO/PCT Patents Fulltext (File 349).

  • To search for patent numbers for countries that use a continuing series (e.g. EP 0813966), enter the two-letter country code, a space, and the one- to eight-digit publication number (usual "serial" number is used for filing numbers) with no leading zeros.
    Example: S PN=EP 813966.
  • For countries that use an annual series (e.g. US 20020000067), enter the two-letter country code, a space, a two-digit year designation (until 1999) or a four-digit year designation (2000-present), and the publication number retaining all leading zeros. (Note: The required number of digits in the publication number can vary by country.)
    Example: S PN=US 20020000067
  • All published patent documents (both granted patents and published applications) are indexed on Dialog with the Patent Number (PN=) prefix.
