Find the Most Effective Search Terms Using Rank in PASCAL?

TOPIC: Produced by the Institut de l'Information Scientifique et Technique (INIST) of the French National Research Council (CNRS), PASCAL (File 144) provides access to the world's scientific and technical literature and includes about 450,000 new citations per year. Available on Dialog since 1973, PASCAL corresponds to the print publication Bibliographie internationale (previously Bulletin signaletique).

The key to targeted searching in PASCAL lies in a combination of keyword searching and using a Dialog specialized command to ferret out appropriate English-language descriptors. Most current records contain English (ED), French (FD) and Spanish (SD) descriptor fields. Searching with /DE retrieves descriptors in any language. However, you can use English-language descriptors by searching in the /ED field. Descriptors are indexed as individual words that you search using proximity connectors or as phrases (e.g., SELECT ULTRASONIC IMAGING/ED).

Likewise, titles of the original documents and any translations of the titles appear in the Title (/TI) field. Titles of documents originally published in English are indexed in the English Title (/ET) field. Most records include an English translation of the original title. Except for stop words, all words in the English Title field are searchable as single words using proximity operators with the /ET suffix.

Related databases include Inspec® (File 2), BioEngineering Abstracts (File 136*), SciSearch®: A Cited Reference Science Database (File 34) and Ei Compendex® (File 8).

In this example you will use keyword terms from the English descriptor and title fields; then you will use the RANK command to pinpoint effective English indexed terms for a search on robotic surgery used on cardiac patients.

4. RANK
the descriptor field. The RANK command performs statistical analysis on retrieved records.

In this case, we want to know which descriptor terms appeared most in the 89 records in Set 2. We also want to gain insight on ways to structure the search.

5. Follow the RANK menu.

Enter a title for the RANKed list and press Enter to see the highest-ranking 50 terms.

Note the Rank Number, the Items (number of records) and the Terms.

Enter the line number(s) of the terms you wish to save. Dialog will create a temporary SearchSave and store the terms you indicated. The highest 8 terms reappear, followed by instructions on what to do next.

Enter EXIT to leave RANK.

Confirm that you wish to exit RANK.

6. EXECUTE
the temporary SearchSave created by Dialog in the RANK command.

7. SELECT from the newly created sets. In this case we want records to contain both “robotics” AND “cardiovascular disease” as descriptor terms.

9. To ensure including “heart” words along with the indexed terms robotics and cardiovascular disease, OR the keyword set with the descriptors set.

10. Use database LIMIT options to restrict retrieval to original documents in English and a publication year range. The colon ORs the years in the range. This is an optional step.

11. TYPE a few records in Format 8 to browse titles and descriptors and check for relevancy.

To select the appropriate record number, look at the range of records in the TYPE command (e.g., 8/8/2).

Notice that in addition to English Descriptors PASCAL indexes Broad Descriptors (/BT). Cardiovascular disease is a Broad Descriptor term. That is why it is important to combine keywords with indexed terminology in PASCAL.

Note: Some records are omitted from this display.
