Search for Specific Disease Statistics in the Incidence and Prevalence Database (IPD)?

TOPIC: When searching for statistics for a specific disease in the Incidence and Prevalence Database (IPD) (File 465), first identify the appropriate ICD-9 (International Classification of Diseases, 9th Edition) code; then combine the ICD code with specific concepts or other variables to achieve a more focused strategy. The complete list of ICD codes is available from the database producer, Timely Data Resources, Inc. See the Bluesheet for contact information.

Since all records with a specific ICD code contain the SAME statistics, only one record needs to be TYPEd in fulltext or Format 9; remaining records may be TYPEd in Format 5, for additional textual information. In many records the article titles are missing (no titles) since these represent ICD code descriptions.

Other Dialog files that may include statistical information include Gale Group PROMT® (File 16), TableBase (File 93), Business & Industry (File 9) and MEDLINE® (File 155).

Data for 1997 through 2003 from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) of the National Center for Health Statistics, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, were used to perform the analyses.

Text: STUDY DESIGN: The objective of this study was to
evaluate the association between medication nonadherence and
clinical outcomes in a large community cohort of 11,532 patients
with diabetes mellitus (DM). Kaiser Permanente of Colorado (KPCO)
is an integrated, nonprofit managed care organization that provides
medical services to more than 400,000 members in the Denver
metropolitan area. The authors conducted a retrospective cohort
study of patients in the KPCO diabetes registry. Patients who were
in the registry as of September 17, 2002 and had continuous
enrollment through December 31, 2003 were included. Patient
adherence to medications was assessed during 2003. The outcomes
were ascertained from January 1, 2004 through April 30, 2005,
which was the most recent date for which follow-up data were
available. Patients were followed up until death or disenrollment
from the health plan. As of April 30, 2005, 96.6% of the patients
were still enrolled or had died. The mean follow-up was 474 days.
Medication adherence was calculated as the proportion of days
covered (PDC), based on the total number of days supplied for
filled prescriptions during the observation interval. Patients
were classified as nonadherent based on a summary PDC less than 80%.
MEDICATION ADHERENCE: Based on the summary PDC,
2456 patients (21.3%) were categorized as nonadherent. Nonadherent
patients were younger

Note - Related Topics: When the term "general comments" occurs in
the ICD-9 description, the information in the abstracts tends to be
more review-like in nature, covering the entire topic under
consideration rather than one specific subset of the diagnosis or
procedure. The information in this classification deals with
prevalence, incidence, mortality, cost, care, and other statistics
associated with the general topic of diabetes. ....
