Search for a Biomedical Subject?

TOPIC: When it comes to finding comprehensive and timely answers to important health issues quickly, medical researchers turn to Dialog. Dialog offers a broad spectrum of databases of importance to researchers in the areas of life sciences, chemistry, pharmacology and others.

Four databases on Dialog have the broadest coverage of biomedical literature: MEDLINE® (File 154), EMBASE® (File72), BIOSIS Previews® (File 55), and SciSearch®--A Cited Reference Database (File 34). This gives you the advantage of using more than one database to access thousands of sources. Each file has its strengths, its focus and its unique journals. A look at titles after removing duplicates reveals the importance and the ease of searching several files at once on Dialog.

Recent news articles suggest that antibiotics can be used to treat neurological diseases such as Lou Gehrig’s Disease (ALS).

In this example, you will find recent articles in the biomedical literature on using antibiotics to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease or ALS). You will search the four core biomedical databases, remove duplicates and view titles from each of the databases.

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN Files 154,72,55,34 to search the four key biomedical databases together. Use the CURRENT feature to restrict the search to this year plus one year back.

2. SELECT terms for the first concept. Use the proximity connector (W) for words adjacent to each other in exact order. OR the synonyms together.

3. SELECT the second concept using OR for synonyms.

4. SELECT the third concept.

5. Combine the three sets using the AND operator.

This systematic review comprises an objective appraisal of
the evidence in regard to the management of respiration in
patients with motor neuron disease (MND/ALS). Studies were
identified through computerised searches of 32 databases.
Internet searches of websites of drug companies and MND/ ALS
research web sites, 'snow balling' and hand searches were
also employed to locate any unpublished study or other
'grey literature' on respiration and MND/ALS. Since
management of MND/ALS involves a number of health
professionals and care workers, searches were made across
multiple disciplines. No time frame was imposed on the
search in order to increase the probability of identifying
all relevant studies, although there was a final limit of
March 2005. Recommendations for patient and carer-based
guidelines for the clinical management of respiration
for MND/ALS patients are suggested
