Use Indexing to Find a Specific Product and Companies Involved With It?

TOPIC: Many Dialog databases have specific indexing to make searching more precise. The Gale Group databases contain Event Names (EN=), Product Names (PN=) and Event Codes (EC=) to help in searching for products. Because the Event Names and Codes are consistent in all Gale Group databases, you can search more than one file simultaneously and get precise retrieval.

In this search, we want to find which companies are involved with a specfic product—the signal generator. We'll start in Gale Group PROMT® (File 16), a general industry database, and once we see our results, we will expand the search to Gale Group F&S Index™ (File 18), Gale Group Trade & Industry Database™ (File 148) and Gale Group Newsearch™ (File 211) by using Dialog's ADD and REPEAT commands.

COMMAND SUMMARY

BEGIN 16
EXPAND EN=PRODUCT

Check appropriate entries and click Select
SELECT S1 AND SIGNAL(W)GENERATOR?
TYPE S2/8/1

DS FROM EACH
Click S3 > Tasks > Rank
Check the field to Rank and click OK

4. Connect keywords to the search using the AND operator.

Use the (w) or () proximity connector to retrieve words right next to each other in the order specified. Add truncation (?) to the end of a word to pick up all forms of the word.

5. TYPE a record or so using Format 8 to see the descriptors.

6. Expand the search by ADDing additional databases. These databases also have indexing similar to File 16.

7. REPEAT the same search you just completed in the new files.

8. REMOVE DUPLICATE records.

9. DISPLAY SETS FROM EACH database to see which files contain the most information.

10. RANK the company name to see which companies are working most on this technology.

Click S3 in the Set Links pane > Tasks > Rank.

11. Check the field you want to RANK and click OK.

The ranked list displays with the company with the most records at the top of the list.

To see some of the company records, check the box in front of the company name; then click View, select a format and the number of items you want to see.

Note that you can also copy your results to an Excel file.
