Dialog "How Do I...?" - Engineering & Technology

Find Research Locations for a Specific Subject?

TOPIC: During a product's infancy, research locations throughout the world, especially universities, are of primary importance to see who is developing a product and where it is being developed.

Databases, such as Inspec (File 4), NTIS: National Information Technical Service (File 6), and Dissertation Abstracts Online (File 35), provide general technical information, government data and university research. For this search we want to find information on locations doing research on signal compression using fourier analysis. We will use the Visual Rank command that lets you perform trend or statistical analysis on an existing search set.

COMMAND SUMMARY

BEGIN 4,6,35
SELECT DATA OR VIDEO? OR SIGNAL? OR IMAGE? OR SPEECH
SELECT COMPRES? OR QUANTI?
SELECT FOURIER
SELECT S1(1N)S2 AND S3
Click S4 in Set Links pane > Rank
Check Corporate Source (CS) and click OK

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN three databases--4,6,35--Inspec, NTIS and Dissertation Abstracts Online. These files provide different approaches to the topic.

2. SELECT keywords that describe the topic.

3. Continue to SELECT keywords that describe the topic as in Set 2 (S2 and Set 3 (S3).

4. Combine the sets to create Set 4 (S4). For this search we will find records in which the data set (S1) is one word from the compression set (S2) and in the same article as the word fourier (S3).

5. Use the Visual Rank command by clicking S4 in the Set Links pane and Rank from the drop-down box.

Use RANK to list the sites from most published to least

6. Click the field you want to rank, in this example the Corporate Source (CS) field, and click OK.

The corporate source field provides the author's affiliation too.

Note: Remove duplicates (RD) was not used because of the disparity of the databases searched.
