Use the MAP Command to Begin a Basic Toxicology Search?

TOPIC: Toxicological information is important in a wide range of areas: industrial hygiene, criminalistics and forensics, poison control, substance abuse research, laboratory safety, to name but a few. Chapman and Hall Chemical Database (File 303), The Merck Index OnlineSM (File 304) and Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS®) provide information on synonyms of chemical names.

These files should be considered to be the central files for locating synonyms and CAS® Registry Numbers (which uniquely identify chemical entities) for searches in other files.

Peer reviewed articles will appear in BIOSIS Previews® (File 5), BIOSIS® Toxicology (File 157), EMBASE® (File 73), MEDLINE® (File 155), PASCAL (File 144), SciSearch®—A Cited Reference Science Database (File 34,434) and other files.

This example shows the use of the MAP command in RTECS to create a temporary SearchSave of synonyms of a chemical, and a method for using the SearchSave to find articles about the chemical in ToxFile® (File 156).

2. EXPAND the chemical name on the Chemical Name (NA=) field.

3. SELECT the appropriate "E" Reference number.

Use the MAP command to create a temporary SearchSave, which contains the synonyms (SY) and CAS Registry Number (RN).

This example shows the creation of temporary SearchSave #TD481.

5. RECALL the temporary SearchSave number to view the terms saved.

6. BEGIN File 156 to search ToxFile.

7. EXECUTE the temporary SearchSave to create search sets of all the hits on cumene or its synonyms in ToxFile.

Note that Cumene appears along with the other synonyms and the CAS Registry Number saved with the MAP command.

If the search statement exceeds 240 characters the system will automatically create an additional SELECT statement.  This EXECUTE STEPS created two SELECT statements, plus S3, which ORed S1 and S2 together.
