Find News on an International Company Using DIALINDEX®?

TOPIC: When you need to find news items about an international company, the first place to go is DIALINDEX®, File 411, the Dialog index file. This file allows you to search the indexes of files that are grouped by subject.

The following search example shows a strategy for retrieving articles about an international company that sells confectionary products. We want to find out if Cadbury Schweppes is in the chewing gum business. The DIALINDEX OneSearch® category selected is INTLNEWS. To see a list of OneSearch categories, click the Set Files link in the dialog box.

COMMAND SUMMARY

BEGIN 411
Enter the OneSearch category INTLNEWS in the Set Files box
In the Select box, enter the search CADBURY()SCHWEPPES/CO AND (SUGAR()FREE OR CHEWING)(2N)GUM/TI,DE,LP
Click Run Search
Click Hits at the top of the column twice to rank files
Check boxes next to the databases of interest and click Begin Hits
SELECT S1/2008:2010
RD

TYPE S3/8,K/1 FROM EACH

Click Links > Display > Type Full Record

HOW TO...

1. BEGIN DIALINDEX (File 411).

2. Enter a specific OneSearch® category in the Set Files box.

3. Enter a search statement in the Select box. Use proximity connectors to connect search terms.

Use parentheses to "nest" concepts together. For the subject terms, restrict the search to the Title, Descriptor and lead paragraph fields.

Note: In DIALINDEX you must enter all search terms in one search statement.

4. To rank the files with the ones with the most hits at the top of the list, click the header "Hits" twice.

5. Check the boxes for the databases you want to search.

Note we did not check Gale Group Globalbase because it is no longer updating and we want current news.

Then click Begin Hits to start the search in the databases you have chosen.

Dialog searches the selected files and provides results in Set 1 (S1).

6. Limit the search to the most current years using a colon for the range.

7. REMOVE DUPLICATE records when searching more than one database.

8. TYPE set S3 in Format 8,K (Key Word In Context) for the first few records using the FROM EACH command.

For pricing information, enter HELP RATES nnn (where nnn is the file number).

Notice that Format 8 shows the title and descriptors and that the KWIC format provides a "window" of text containing your search terms and surrounding words.

9. Select record(s) you want to view in more detail and click Links next to the record(s). From the dropdown box, click Display > Type Full Record.
The complete record we requested displays from File 258.
