Locate the Top Companies in X Industry
TOPIC: For this search you will locate top consulting companies in the human resources industry using Standard Industrial Classification Codes (SIC codes). The SIC code (SC=) locates both Primary and Secondary lines of business. You can also narrow the search to just the primary line of business as we will do in this search, using the Primary Classification code (PC=). Alternatively, SELECT the SIC (Standard Industrial Classification) code directly, if known.
D&B—Dun's Market Identifiers™ (File 516) is a good database for locating U.S. companies in a specific industry and then identifying the top 10 by sales.
Note: You can use other criteria to limit your search:
By State: S ST=WA (2-letter state postal code)
By Region: S RG=MIDWEST
By the headquarters: S SF=HEADQUARTERS
By the ultimate company location: S SF=ULTIMATE
By Employee size: S EM>=1000 (EM total employees)
By Employee location: S EH>=50 (EH location employees)
By Executives: S S1/NAMES limits records that contain at least 1 executive name
See the Bluesheets for other criteria.
COMMAND SUMMARY
BEGIN 516
VISUAL EXPAND PC=8742
Check box(es) of the code you want and click the Select button
SELECT S1/SALES
SORT S2/ALL/SA,D
REPORT S2/CO,SA/1-10
HOW TO...

1. BEGIN 516, Dun's Market Identifiers.
2. Visual EXPAND using PC= for the Primary SIC code (Standard Industrial Classification code) and the 4-digit code to identify the appropriate code. Note that the more general category is Management Consulting Services.
Check the code you want and click the Select button.
The "2+2" extensions to the 4-digit code are only applicable in the U.S. D&B files.

3. Restrict your set to those companies that have SALES data available.
4. SORT the final set by sales in descending order.
If you are looking for just the top 10 or 50 companies, you may want to limit your set even further before you sort, for example, companies with sales greater than $20 million
(S S2 AND SA>20M).
The smaller the set, the faster the results will be sorted.
5. TYPE the first 10 records in Format 9 or use the REPORT command, choosing the fields you want to view (e.g., company name and sales) and the number of records.

|

The first 10 records are listed in the report with sales in dollars.
