Welcome to Dialog!

We hope that you will find this New User Guide a useful source of reference both now and in the future. It has been written for customers using one or more of the following Dialog products:

  • DialogWeb™—one of our most popular information products, DialogWeb brings you access to the full content, power and precision of Dialog via your web browser. By offering two modes of searching—Command Search and Guided Search—DialogWeb is an ideal product for information professionals and end users alike. You can go straight to DialogWeb at: http://www.dialogweb.com/. We recommend that you review Introducing DialogWeb 2.0, a 14-page introduction to DialogWeb. Then take the DialogWeb Guided Search Tutorial to help you make the most of your initial search experience.

  • DialogSelect™ on the Web—again accessed via the Web, DialogSelect on the Web is divided into a suite of easy access, industry specific, information solutions tailored to specific industries (eg: intellectual property, pharmaceuticals). Each information solution has its own URL (Internet address) allowing the user to go straight to it at the beginning of a search. To access DialogSelect on the Web go to: http://www.dialogselect.com/.

We recommend that you consult DialogSelect Quick Tour. DialogSelect offers easy point-and-click access to a broad collection of popular Dialog databases. For a quick tour of DialogSelect, go to www.dialogselect.com and scroll down. Then click the Quick Tour button on the lower right side of the DialogSelect screen.

  • DialogClassic™ on the Web—for information professionals who wish to combine the speed and power of Classic Dialog (see below), with the convenience of browser access, this is the solution. DialogClassic on the Web is the latest addition to the Dialog range and can be accessed at: http://www.dialogclassic.com. We recommend that you work through one of the Introduction to Classic Dialog online courses to make the most of your initial search experience. You will also want to use the ONTAP Practice Databases.

  • Classic Dialog®—information professionals around the world have traditionally turned to Classic Dialog for their information requirements. Classic Dialog is a dial-up service, requiring installation of special communications software. It is widely recognised for its powerful and precise search capabilities. We recommend that you work through one of the Introduction to Classic Dialog online courses to make the most of your initial search experience. You will also want to use the ONTAP Practice Databases. Finally, if you are connecting to Classic Dialog via a telecommunications network, be sure to download DialogLink, our free software tool for enhanced access.

As a Dialog subscriber, you are assigned a User Number and Password your User Number and Password are valid for all four products. It is a matter of preference which product(s) you use. Your password should be kept confidential to avoid any unauthorised use of your Dialog account. Please always refer to your user number when contacting Dialog with any queries.

Since many features are common to all four Dialog products, the support information presented in this Guide should be assumed to apply to all four unless otherwise stated. Where differences do exist between the products, these are made clear in each case.
